Relaxing in Goa: a five-day itinerary

Goa, an idyllic Indian state nestled along the Arabian Sea's coast, is celebrated for its sun-kissed beaches and diverse history.

This popular holiday destination, with its Portuguese influence evident in architecture, culture, and cuisine, captivates visitors of all ages. Goa's Christian majority, a legacy of its 500-year Portuguese history, also adds to its unique culture. And, if you enjoy adventure, you'll love its varied terrain, rich flora, and fauna.

Goa is divided into two distinct zones: North Goa buzzes with vibrant nightlife, while South Goa offers tranquil, picturesque beaches.

Thanks to its small size and efficient transport, travelling between these zones is both easy and affordable. From its stunning beaches and historic churches to bustling restaurants and lively nightlife, Goa promises a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

How long should I spend in Goa?

If you ask me, every visit to Goa leaves you yearning for more. I recommend at least a 5-day stay to truly soak in its splendor, beyond just beaches and shacks. Of course, if you have more time to spare, a longer stay is better.

The best time to visit is from October to March, ideal for water sports and vibrant local life. However, the monsoon season unveils Goa's lush green beauty, despite limiting some activities.

If you're confident driving a scooter or a motorcycle, renting one offers flexibility and allows you to navigate through narrow lanes and crowded markets with ease. Otherwise, taxis and app-based cabs like Ola and Uber are readily available, and for longer distances, it's easy to arrange private car rentals with drivers.

North Goa (2-3 days)

North Goa is a vibrant hub, known for its lively beaches and pulsating nightlife. Start your adventure at Candolim Beach, where the golden sands meet the azure waters, making it perfect for a relaxing day under the sun.

Venture to Calangute and Baga Beach for water sports and beachside shacks serving delicious Goan cuisine. These beaches are bustling with activity, offering everything from parasailing to jet skiing. In the evening, explore the local markets for souvenirs and experience the lively Goan spirit at one of the many nightclubs.

The next day, visit the historical Fort Aguada to witness a splendid example of Portuguese architecture and enjoy panoramic views of the sea. The Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-visit for its religious significance and architectural beauty.

Spend your evening at Anjuna Beach, famous for its flea market and psychedelic trance parties. The beach is a perfect spot to watch the sunset and enjoy the Goan vibe.

Recommendations

Panjim (1-2 days)

Panjim, the capital city of Goa, is a blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy. Start your visit with a stroll through the Latin Quarter of Fontainhas, where the colourful Portuguese houses and narrow streets offer a glimpse into Goa's colonial past.

Visit the Goa State Museum or the Gallery Gitanjali for a dose of art and history. In the evening, take a cruise on the Mandovi River, a perfect way to experience the city's beauty from the water.

The next day, indulge in water sports like scuba diving, snorkelling, or banana boat rides, available at Miramar Beach. For those visiting in the non-monsoon months, these activities are a must-do for an adrenaline rush.

In the evening, explore the vibrant street markets of Panjim, where you can shop for everything from spices to handicrafts.

Recommendations

Stay: Vivanta Goa, Panaji for a luxurious stay with modern amenities and easy access to Panjim's attractions.

Book: A guided heritage walk through Fontainhas to learn about the history and culture of this unique neighbourhood. These walks are often led by locals, providing an authentic insight into Panjim's past and present.

South Goa (2 days)

South Goa is the antithesis of the north, known for its serene beaches and laid-back atmosphere. Palolem Beach is a must-visit, famous for its scenic beauty and calm waters. Spend your day sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the quieter side of Goa.

A short drive away is the secluded Butterfly Beach, accessible by a scenic trek or a boat ride. The beach is perfect for those seeking solitude and a chance to connect with nature. Enjoy the scenic beauty, spot dolphins, and relax in this untouched part of Goa.

The next day, explore the Portuguese influence in South Goa. Visit the magnificent churches of Old Goa, including the Se Cathedral and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll through the streets of Margao, the cultural capital of Goa, and explore its traditional markets and eateries.

Recommendations

Stay: Coco Cabana for comfortable rooms in a convenient location just a few steps away from the beach.

Book: A visit to a tropical spice plantation for a deep dive into the world of spices for which India is renowned globally.

If you have more time in Goa

With over 35 beaches, covering them all in one trip to Goa is impossible. There will be several that you will pass by while travelling, but every beach will be nothing short of spectacular.

If you have more time, my advice would be to plan your vacation in South Goa if you wish to soak the tranquil side of Goa. Some other suggestions (beyond the beach) are:

  • Explore the wildlife sanctuaries: For nature enthusiasts, Goa's wildlife sanctuaries like the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park offer a great escape. You can experience the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats, including bird watching, trekking trails, and perhaps a visit to the famous Dudhsagar Falls.

  • Experience Goan backwaters: Take a serene backwater cruise in the Mandovi or Zuari River. These cruises offer a unique perspective of Goa's countryside, lush mangroves, and traditional fishing villages.

  • Old Goa: Spend some time in Old Goa, exploring the historical churches, museums, and art galleries. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a deep dive into Goa's colonial past.

  • Grande Island: If you're an adventure seeker, Grande Island offers excellent opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling where you can explore exotic marine life and underwater shipwrecks..
